Peter Young Mentoring Program
| HISTORY AND PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM | |
| Be a PYHIT
Mentor. Do you enjoy working with others and helping with their
personal growth? Can you help someone manage money? Can you assist in
improving job readiness skills? Can you empower others and build
self-esteem? Are you a great communicator? Can you assist in improving
parenting skills? If your answered YES to the above questions and take
pleasure in helping others, become a Mentor. 820 River Street Inc., the Altamont Program, Inc., and Peter Young Shelter Services, Inc., are part of the integrated network collectively known as Peter Young Housing, Industries, & Treatment (PYHIT). First, as the Chaplain at Mount McGregor Correctional Facility in the early 1970’s, Father Young developed the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT) program that eventually became (and remains today) a model for the New York State Correctional System. The change in Rockefeller drug law also helped to shift emphasis from criminalizing addiction to treatment and recovery. Father Young’s aftercare network, referred to as the “Glidepath to Recovery,” effectively addresses the obstacles to a successful reentry by providing guidance in the way of professional treatment, a safe place to stay, and a meaningful job. It has developed a neighborhood constituency and its advantage is in engaging community residents who are not well-served by mainstream systems. In an integrated, seamless fashion over the course of decades, we have been able to develop a high degree of commitment to serve our clients and community. Mentoring services are offered to families and individuals both male and female. Participants will include those residing at Albany County Travolapp.pdfnsition House and Albany Parole Stabilization of 45 South Ferry Street, Albany NY. As well as, Veterans, and Travelers Aid Families residing at Schuyler Inn located at 575 Broadway, Menands NY. The mentoring program includes individuals who were previously incarcerated, veterans and singles parents. Majority of the mentoring relationship will take place while the consumer(s) are still housed at a PYHIT facility. A mentoring relationship post housing independence will provide limited structure. The mentoring program is designed to provide structure so that individuals can successfully transition into an independent life. The mentors will help create self-sufficient individuals. |

| PYHIT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES | |
| Volunteering with PYHIT is a unique opportunity. You will be given the chance to work with people from various backgrounds including: low-income individuals, homeless families, previously incarcerated individuals, and veterans. This particular population typically does not get many second chances. They have made mistakes in their lives and are on the road to recovery, redemption and rehabilitation. You can be the change factor in their lives, you can make a difference. Not only can you share your experiences but you can learn of their stories too. If you are interested in volunteering for either a one-time opportunity or long-term commitment, please fill out an application. Please click here to download the form. | |
