Independent Housing

Father Young, in the course of his tenure as Chaplain at Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility, often heard inmates who were about to be released from prison remark that they were "all dressed up with no place to go". This convinced him that providing housing for people who are fighting addiction can be just as important as treatment.

To that end, VESTA Community Housing, Inc. was created, and today manages a multitude of properties under the PYHIT umbrella.

Incorporated in 1992, VESTA was established to be the property development and holding arm of PYHIT. As set forth in the articles of incorporation, VESTA's purpose is to restore individuals with addiction issues to their rightful role in society as responsible, respectful, working citizens who can support their families. The housing program greatly enhances the effectiveness of PYHIT's treatment and employment programs by providing the programmatic framework necessary for a supportive community.

VESTA has a wealth of experience with local, state, and federal funding programs which support housing. VESTA has received funding from the NYS Department of Social Services, Homeless Housing Assistance Program, and Housing and Urban Development.

The Altamont Program fulfills the role of the management firm, managing and operating the VESTA properties on a daily basis, along with other properties that are leased or rented.

PYHIT has a variety of certified residences, supportive living environments, and transitional housing, all of which are detailed in elsewhere in this site. There are 12 other sites, however, that are utilized as independent housing (labeled "permanent" in the chart below). These apartment buildings usually have on-site managers, but otherwise provide a high level of independence for tenants who have graduated from treatment and are easing back into community living. The apartments are provided at a low cost to the tenant (generally between $250 to $425 per month) so that they may be able to use part of their earnings rebuilding their lives and supporting their families.

Below is a complete listing of all properties owned and/or managed by VESTA, 820 River Street, and Altamont Program. An asterisk * means the property is owned by VESTA Community Housing.
