Educational Services

An increase in educational abilities leads to heightened self-esteem, increased employability, and an enhanced potential for a positive adjustment into the community.

The Adult Basic Education curriculum identifies and describes math and reading skills essential to a workplace literacy program for participants in the vocational programs.

Our classes are geared towards transition into the vocational training component of PYHIT. For example, food service workers read from industry-related textbooks and work on math problems that build on their knowledge of the culinary arts. The curriculum also gives the learner a flexible framework for strengthening reading and math skills in a context that suits the learner.

Pathways to Independence

In a time when educational programs have been cut, Pathways To Independence was established to assist qualified clients in accessing professional career training and higher education opportunities that will bring them economic self-sufficiency.

Since 1997, the program has been operating in cooperation with the College of St. Rose and the Sisters of St. Joseph. A counseling and learning center is located on the college campus with donated professional assistance, including the use of the computer lab.

The first step involves going to the Continuing Education Center (located at the Eleanor Young Clinic) for assessment and direction.

The second step is reviewing college and career options. Assistance is provided with admissions, preparations, and financial aid.

Pathway's real strength is not only the expertise of the instructors, but its affiliation with PYHIT, so students benefit from an accompanying array of services beyond this program.

Parenting Skills

Family issues and concerns consume the bulk of the incarcerated person's energy and emotional strength. Too often they are a woman who is the head of a single parent household, and the situation affects the quality of life of her uprooted children.

Both men and women who have been the victims of violence need to be educated about how it affects their children. The majority of our clients have not had proper child care models themselves and the only type of parenting known is destructive.

PYHIT's parenting classes, values classification, and role playing exercises help prepare program participants to assume the care giver role. These classes, in conjunction with the treatment, training, and housing that are provided by other programs in the company give clients their greatest hope in supporting their family.
