Alternatives to Incarceration
Honor Court
The Honor Court program receives
funding through the New York State Division of Probation and Correctional
Alternatives to provide quick, cost-effective, and responsible intervention for
persons who face incarceration. Many drug-addicted persons are facing jail
solely due to their addiction, and prison terms often do not help them solve the
problems that lie at the root of their troubles. Treatment is the only answer.
To the courts, Honor Court offers immediate alcoholism
assessment, a complete guarantee of chemical abuse evaluation and treatment, and
a recommendation plan before the next scheduled court date. To the client it
offers help in overcoming addiction and remaining out of already overcrowded
prisons so that they may return to productive and stable lives as soon as
possible.
Long waiting lists exist in treatment facilities, but
this program monitors a client's progress through initial detox or approach to
social services to satisfy the court's requirement for an individual's release.
The program also provides alcohol and substance abuse education within the
county jail setting.
Honor Court serves Albany,
Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Montgomery County jails, and the courts of Albany
City, Albany County, Bethlehem, Colonie, Cohoes City, Saratoga, Rensselaer
County, Troy City, and Montgomery.
Altamont II
The Altamont II program is also
funded through the New York State Division of Probation and Correctional
Alternatives. The goal of this program is to reduce overcrowding and unnecessary
incarcerations in Onondaga, Oneida, Warren, Washington, Fulton, Montgomery, and
Westchester Counties by presenting a program model for a short-term residential
alternative to incarceration.
The target population is
drug-involved and alcohol-involved detainees and convicted offenders who would
otherwise be sentenced to 30 days or more and would not otherwise receive any
rehabilitation services.
