Empire State Report

TOP TEN SURVEY RESULTS - 2/1/02

 

Two years ago, Empire State Report celebrated its 25th Anniversary by putting together a reader survey of the Top 25 New Yorkers, spanning the 25 years of the magazine. Although it has new meaning now, we have conducted a new reader survey.

2001 turned out to be, for memorable and unforgettable reasons, one of the most historic years in the history of the United States, and the Empire State. The turn of events set in motion be September 11 changed many of our outlooks. Following those events, many of our thoughts on politics, government, and being citizens of New York changed as well. Some of these changes have been reflected in our readers' choices for this survey. Amid the flurries of the well-knowns comes our Readers' Survey Results:

Empire State Report's TOP TEN New Yorkers of 2001.

Here they are:

  1. George Pataki noted specifically more cost-effective, outcome-oriented state government.

  2. Father Peter Young noted specifically for for his efforts in changing the lives of alcoholics.

  3. James Dillard, MD DC CAC noted for helping to integrate the best practices in medicine, and co-author of "Alternative Medicine for Dummies" in 1998

  4. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani who needs no introduction after showing his leadership and dedication to the people of New York and America.

  5. Reverend Michael Judge (in Memoriam) noted touching the lives of fire fighters

  6. Paul Belica Executive Director of the New York State Housing Finance Agency at the beginning of the limited profit housing era and initial financing of the State University System in the late 1960s and early 1970s

  7. Richard Mills Commissioner of the State Education Department (for strides made in education and testing)

  8. Senator Joseph Bruno for putting the State's needs first

  9. Honorable Judith Kaye for leading the Court System into the 21st Century

  10. NYC Fire Department, NYC Police Department

We dedicate a special honor to the victims of the World Trade Center Tragedy, and to their families and friends, who will carry on their lives for all of us.
