About the former Carmelite monastery

The large, 38,000 square foot building is located just off Exit 6 of Highway 890 in the heart of Schenectady on over 3 acres of land. Because the nuns who lived here for 80 years preferred silent contemplation, the building has over 120 rooms on three levels so that they could work in solitude. This gives PYHIT the ability to not only house all of administration, but the potential to host a residential and/or educational programs in the future (currently the building is used for administration, an AIDS/HIV education program, and a CASAC training program).

The building consists of three levels. The basement level has offices, maintenance facilities, and two garages/storage. The main level contains offices, common areas (future kitchen, dining, recreation), the chapel, and caretaker quarters. The top level consists mainly of bedrooms and other potential residential areas.
